If Learn with Ruro ever got the chance to appear on National TV this is what I'd say....
My journey with Learn with Ruro (LwR) started long before I really knew it. I trained as a Pharmacist with a specialist interest in Diabetes and Obesity. I got the privilege to work in the NHS, the private sector and for a pharmaceutical company and see all sorts of interesting patients. In my time there I realised that a lot of healthcare was happening too late, not enough people were taught or knew how to look after their health in order to avoid getting chronic diseases. Training to become a health coach really helped me to help my patients as I was able to give them more practical advice and support in behaviour and habit changes that led them to better health.
It was when I went on maternity leave with my first daughter that I really had the time to think about how I would teach my own child about leading a healthy lifestyle. In my spare time I had always volunteered with children so I knew the type of games and activities that they enjoyed. So i put all this knowledge to the test and started to create the resources for LwR. My beautiful nieces and nephew became my guinea pigs as I tested out different resources and refined them to something they would enjoy.
I still wholeheartedly believe that children should have fun, evidence based education about health and nutrition from a young age to develop the habits that will serve them in the future. Families and schools should be supported in having these conversations with children from a young age to really see the benefits. Its much easier to implement new habits at a young age than later on.... whats the saying about old dogs and new tricks?
I do hope you stick around and use LwR to have those conversations about heath with your children, nieces, grandchildren or any children in your care. Lets help the next generation live longer and healthier lives.
